Local athletes deliver star performances

South Africa’s top youth athletes battled things out during the Athletics South Africa (ASA) Track and Field Night Series 2016, held at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday evening.

POLOKWANE – The first chapter of the day saw athletes from various schools compete on the tracks in relay with the senior boys wrapping up the day’s events with the 4×400 m relay.

The athletes from Hoërskool Pietersburg (PHS) reigned victorious by claiming most of the relay race wins.

PHS u/15 girls, u/15 boys, u/16 girls, u/17 boys, u/19 girls and u/19 boys relay teams finished in first place winning gold medals with the u/16 boys’ team claiming silver.

Tom Naudé Technical High School u/16 boys’ team managed to ascend to the podium taking first place.

Limpopo Athletics (LIMA) President, Tshifhiwa Margaret Makhoshi, said this was the first time LIMA hosted such a big tournament.

“Everything went well and I am happy with the way local athletes performed. I am sure we stayed true to the ASA mission which is to make a contribution toward the transformation of our society through the development of athletics from grassroots level to the highest level of excellence,” Makhoshi said.

She further said it was a great honour for LIMA to host such an event as this was the first of its kind in South Africa.

ASA President, Aleck Skhosana says, “We have had a brilliant 2016 Track and Field season. The ASA Night Series has delivered with star performances from all the athletes,” says Skhosana.

“We believe our relay teams can spring a few surprises in the upcoming IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Northern Poland, in July and the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August, and we want to ensure they are well prepared if they are selected to represent the nation at the respective games,” explains Skhosana.

He would like to thank Limpopo Athletics, the sponsors and the entire Local Organising Committee for making the event a success.
