Rape-accused doctor remains in custody

A 39-year-old doctor from the Lebowakgomo Hospital was denied bail on Tuesday in the Thabamoopo Magistrate’s Court. The doctor was arrested shortly after a rape case was opened against him by a 17-year-old girl.

LIMPOPO – According to the Spokesperson for the Lebowakgomo SAPS, W/O Manong Tsehla  the girl went to the hospital late on Monday evening for a consultation, she was examined by the doctor and told to come back the following day. “As it was late, the girl decided to sleep on a bench at the hospital instead of going home”. According to police information the incident occurred when the doctor offered her an isolated room on the hospital premises to sleep.

She went home the following day and disclosed the information to her boyfriend and parents. She was taken to the police station where she opened a rape case against the doctor.

The Democratic Alliance’s Shadow Minister of Health, Langa Bodlani (MPL) calls on Limpopo Health MEC, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, to suspend the doctor with immediate effect. “By suspending him, it will allow other patients to continue using this hospital without fear. The DA will ensure that patients who depend on public health facilities are protected,” said Bodlani.

The doctor was remanded in custody until his formal bail application on Wednesday, 1 Jun.

The Spokesperson for the Limpopo Department of Health, Derick Kganyago said they have precautionary suspended the doctor as the matter is being dealt with by the court of law.
