Education dept calls for early enrollment

When parents are late to enroll their children at a new school, it causes a ripple effect which disrupts the learning of the other learners

POLOKWANE – This is why the department of education urges parents and caregivers to enroll their children now for the 2017 academic year at the school of their choice.

One of the teachers at a local rural high school talks about the need for parents and caregivers to heed to the department’s request and register their children before the deadline.

The teacher, who asked that the school not be mentioned in this article as teachers are not permitted to talk to the media, says the same thing has happened every year since she started teaching.

“Children are only brought in on the first day of school to be registered and then some of the parents do not have the correct documentation required for registration. As a result, the child is only allowed to attend class either the following day or even days later and this disrupts the process for the other learners,” she explains.

Apparently, there have been incidents where parents wait up to two weeks to bring their children in which puts strain on the teacher, the new learner and their classmates as the process needs to be adapted to accommodate the new learner.

The department of education has recognised this issue and that is why they announced that the enrollment dates for the 2017 school year will be between 16 May to 21 June this year.

“We call on all parents and guardians whose children will be going to school for the first time, or moving to a new school next year to immediately collect registration forms from the schools nearest to their home or work address. These forms must be completed and returned to the said schools as a matter of extreme urgency, particularly in the urban areas because they have a great demand for admission of learners,” department spokesperson, Dr Naledzani Rasila, says.
