Wheelchair Wednesday: 2 boys given the gift of mobility

The Association for Persons with Disabilities (APD) recently hosted the launch of the fourth Wheelchair Wednesday ceremony.

POLOKWANE – During the event, the City of Polokwane was able to donate wheelchairs to two children who desperately needed them. The state of the art wheelchairs were specifically made for the two boys by CE mobility and were handed over by Executive Mayor of Polokwane, Thembi Nkadimeng. “We as the municipality are always trying our best to help people living with disabilities. We know the challenges that they experience and we are happy that today we got to help these two beautiful boys get around better and live comfortably,” Nkadimeng said. The two boys are nine year old Tumisho Maakamedi, and 12 year old Lucky Matsimela.

“I’m overjoyed and I’m absolutely thankful to APD and the City of Polokwane. I feel like crying because my son has been struggling without a wheelchair since he was born,” Alina Matsimela, Lucky’s mother said.

Maria Mankoe, Project Manager of Kabosadi Disability centre said: “They’re from our centre. We have seen them struggle and now we are happy that they can move around on their own without difficulty. It its truly a blessing.”

Johnny Graham is the Public Education and Awareness Officer at APD.

“I am grateful for the support. I am positive that we will still get more entries for the wheelchair donations. Our target is 20 wheelchairs and we have ten for now so we are halfway there and optimistic about the future,” Graham concluded.
