The sentiment of the community is loud and clear, NO BAIL

Women in and around Polokwane gather outside the Polokwane Magistrate's Court today, where the men accused of the kidnapping of Anisah Moosa in March, are applying for bail.

POLOKWANE – It is alleged Samuel Kubo, Elias Gafane and Benny Mudau kidnapped Moosa (35) at her home in Nirvana and demanded R3 million in ransom.

She was rescued a few days later during a shoot-out with police and the alleged kidnappers in Lebowakgomo.

The suspects face charges which include kidnapping and attempted murder.

In an earlier interview, spokesperson for the family and former Crime Line boss Yusuf Abramjee, said the court could not ignore the public interest the case has attracted.

“The sentiment of the community is loud and clear. They don’t want the suspects to be granted bail and we as the family remain very confident that the court will not grant them bail. The support from the community has been fantastic. We see today that members of both the ANC Women’s League and the DA, converge, hold hands and saying, enough is enough,” he said.

Testifying for the state, Col Isaac Brancorn said they had a strong case against all three suspects, indicating there is enough evidence to link them to the crime.

He said one of the suspects was tracked through the particulars of his vehicle, which was found abandoned after a shoot-out with the police, while he then pointed out the other two men.

All the suspects have individual defense attorneys.

The lawyers have made submissions that their clients were assaulted by the police during questioning and that the state’s case is weak.

They also pressed on Brancorn to divulge information on the firearm and cartridges that were recovered at the scene as well as pending forensic results.

He however, declined to do so, saying he could not reveal the merits of the case. He only told the court that the 9 mm firearm was taken for ballistic testing and finger prints have been lifted from it. The results are expected in June.

Closing arguments in the suspects’ bail applications are expected to continue today (Thursday).
