R170 00 muni bill leads to raid

After residents complained about suspicious activities at a house in Doornkraal Street, the Polokwane Municipality, Westenburg Police and the Ladanna Community Police Forum (CPF) stepped in on Friday.

POLOKWANE – On arrival at the overpopulated house they found illegal electrical connections and excessive water wastage.

“The house was occupied by foreigners. Immigrations are verifying whether the people are legally in the country or not. We believe the house is used at a drug and prostitution hub. Inspectors from the municipality found the account to be in arrears by over R170 000. The owner has made arrangements with the municipality to pay the money,” councillor Mabotse Mothiba explained.

Capt Mohlaka Mashiane, Westenburg Police Spokesperson, confirmed the operation with the councillor and CPF.

“The police K9 unit searched the property and nothing illegal was confiscated from the premises. The house was occupied by many people, but no arrests were made,” Mashiane said.

Matshidiso Mothapo, Municipal Spokesperson, said the matter was investigated and the illegal connections were cut, two cables, circuit breakers and their meters were removed.

“The matter has been forwarded to our legal services for further action that includes issuing of sanctions and opening a police case. The municipality considers such acts in a serious light and will not tolerate it. We urge residents to report any suspicious or illegal connections of municipal services to the municipality,” Mothapo said.
