Lim bikers ‘just ride’ to support their cause

May 7 was International Female Ride Day. Women from various motorcycle clubs came together to celebrate this day by riding to different locations around the province.

POLOKWANE- When one thinks of motorcycles, female bikers are not the first thing that come to mind. For many years, it has been thought that women do not belong on bikes.

These are the kinds of misconceptions that Mariaan Coetzee, organiser of Lady Bikers SA Limpopo, and her fellow bikers are trying to dispel.

International Female Ride Day© (IFRD) is a campaign for women motorbike riders with the purpose of highlighting and profiling the many numbers of women riders enjoying the sport. Its mission is to build awareness of women motorcycle riders and promoting those who enjoy the sport across all cultures and communities. All the while encouraging other women who have not yet explored motorcycling to take up the activity.

Coetzee explained why they embarked on this journey

“This occasion has been celebrated all over the world for the past ten years so this year we decided to join in on it.”

“We are also trying to raise awareness for female riders and we want to let people know that there are female bikers out here,” Coetzee said.

The group started in Polokwane then drove through Mokopane and Naboom then back to Polokwane.

It wasn’t just the women who were involved, a few men also showed up to show their support.
