Vuwani riots: suspects behind bars

Eleven of the 21 suspects arrested in connection with incidents of public violence, malicious damage to property and arson in the Vuwani, Levubu and Hlangani policing areas appeared in the Malamulele Magistrates Court this morning.

LIMPOPO –  They are remanded in custody until 16 May for a formal bail application, said provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.

The 21 suspects were arrested in the wake of the violence which erupted in the troubled area of Vuwani last week, where 24 schools, a satellite police station, as well as a post office were damaged.

“The remaining six suspects are expected to appear before Thohoyandou  Magistrate Court.” Four of these are minors and have been handed to the probation officer for investigation and assessment.

Ledwaba said the area was relatively quiet during over the  weekend.

“The police are monitoring the situation and more arrests are expected,” he said.
