Learners share their views on the situation in Vuwani

The number of schools that have been affected by the violent protests in Vuwani has now increased to 23.

POLOKWANE – Provincial police spokesperson, Lt Col Malesela Ledwaba says 15 people have been arrested in connection with the torching and damage of the schools.

Some learners share their views on the situation in Vuwani.

A team of ministers will today travel to Vuwani where they will meet with the Venda king.

The Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Des van Rooyen, the Minister for State Security, David Mahlobo and the Deputy Minister for Police, Maggie Sotyu will meet king Toni Mphephu Ramabulana and other stakeholders at the king’s palace in Nzhelele to find a solution on the volatile situation in Vuwani.

Meanwhile, Bungeni villagers have vowed to protect their schools.

Petrus Sambo, Bungeni Taxi Rank secretary, said they have divided themselves into groups to guard the schools, working in shifts.

“When we see starngers coming closer to our schools, we call the police. We are about the education of our children. If they are burning schools, let them do it on their territory, not here at Bungeni. They were fighting against the Municipal Demarcation Board’s decision of incorporating Vuwani in the newly formed municipality, but now it is turning like a tribal war,” he said.
