Top doctor dies in bike accident

A Saturday afternoon motorcycle ride just outside the city turned deadly for one of the country's most renowned fertility specialists

POLOKWANE – Dr Herman Netshidzivhani (50) collided with a sedan on the N1 bypass near Mall of the North on Saturday.

Approaching the scene, it was clear from the motionless body that a tragedy had just unfolded, the space blanket testimony to a life lost.

All around, the weekend goings-on of a bustling city continued, undisturbed, the silence on the scene only broken by the occasional sobbing of the deceased’s close friends.

More bikers started gathering around, taking off their helmets as a token of respect.

In carrying out my task, I make my way to the last moments of a man, described by many as a trailblazer in his field.

Netshidzivhani practiced as a medical specialist for more than 25 years.

Colleagues of this founder and director of the Parklane Fertility Centre, said he was a humble man whose achievements he kept to himself.

“He helped thousands of couples conceive. He had a passion for people, was well loved and was an example to family, friends and colleagues. He was passionate about riding on his motorcycle, there was no way he could be without it,” a colleague who wanted to remain anonymous, said.

Netshidzivhani leaves behind his wife and four children. Funeral arrangements are being finalised as the family plans to return his body to the village of Tshaulu, Thohoyandou, where he was born.

Polokwane police spokesperson, Ntobeng Phala, confirmed a case of culpable homicide had been opened against the driver of the sedan.
