Job prospects at Medupi

The Lephalale Municipality and Medupi have launched the Bulk Recruitment Programme to reduce the high level of unemployment in the area

LIMPOPO – With job prospects scarce, the people of Lephalale now have plenty to celebrate after the local municipality announced that there will be loads of job opportunities on a multi-million Rand project at Medupi power station.

The municipality and the energy supplier have launched the Bulk Recruitment Programme in a calculated bid to reduce the high level of unemployment in the area.

Mayor, Jack Maeko, confirmed the project will employ a total number of 1 917 to work as boilermakers, clerks, general workers, boiler managers, among other job opportunities.

Maeko said: “through the Bulk Recruitment Programme, we are informed by the Constitution, especially Chapter 7, that we should promote the social and economic development of citizens. The best way to empower our people is through job creation, and skills development and transfer.

“It should be noted that we are launching this programme in a bid to grow the economy of our district and to a wider milieu, the entire province of Limpopo. This partnership between our municipality and the Medupi power station is going to open many doors to assist the needy people, more especially when the economy of our country is not friendly towards job seekers.

“Once the project is completed, it will forge relationships with other private sector companies to see if we cannot find means to create permanent job opportunities”.

Medupi will be the world’s fourth largest dry-cooled coal power station.

With Kusile and Ingula, it is expected to stem an imminent power supply crisis in South Africa with an installed capacity of 4 764MW.
