No arrest made after guard is shot during armed robbery

A security guard of Malomo and Sons Security, was rushed to the Voortrekker Hospital on Monday morning after he was shot in the thigh during an armed robbery at Choice Supermarket in Nelson Mandela Drive.

MOKOPANE – Javed Muthiya, Manager of Choice Supermarket, said he received a call at about 04:35 informing him that there was a break-in at the store.

Muthiya further said: “Malomo Security started to suspect something was wrong after they could not reach the three guards and went to investigate.

“They found the three guards who were on duty, tied-up in the nearby bushes. One was wounded.”

It is alleged that the security guard saw a suspicious vehicle and when he went to investigate, three of the five suspects emerged from the vehicle.

Two of the suspects were armed with firearms and one of the suspects shot the guard in the left thigh.

The other two suspects tied all three guards up and took them to the nearby bushes on the corner of Schoeman Street, while the other three suspects broke into the store through the roof.

The suspects took off with silver, cigarettes and hair pieces to the value of approximately R110 000. They also stole two cell phones from the guards.

According to Muthiya his store has been targeted many times before and last year June suspects also broke in through the roof at exactly the same spot.

“My main concern is up to now I have not received any updates with regards to last year’s break-in, that does not leave me with much hope for justice with regards to this year’s robbery.” John Malomo said the security guard has already been discharged and he is recuperating at home.

Mokopane police spokesperson, Sgt Irene Masingi, reported: “No suspects have been arrested and a thorough investigation is ongoing.”
