Muni requests residents to not dump litter illegally

The Polokwane Municipality calls on all residents to play a role in keeping the city and surrounding areas clean by using skip containers to dispose waste at various points

POLOKWANE – This after Capricorn Voice was contacted by residents from Greenside Ext 44, complaining about the dumped rubbish by Ext 78 residents in an open field between Ext 44 and 78.

A resident from Ext 44, Caiphus Mathiba, said dumping of rubbish in their open spaces was a serious challenge to them as people often dumped loads of rubbish near their yards, and that it made their street look dirty.

“It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure our areas are always clean. People should not take advantage of municipal workers. This is very dangerous because it does not only affect the municipality but our health as well,” he said.

James Maphosa of Ext 78 said they had nothing to do with the rubbish because the municipality had never collected the waste for long time.

We waited for a long time for the municipality to come and collect the bins, but no one came. We could not leave the bins on the streets, as this would make our place dirty.

Municipal spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, said the municipality had placed a skip container for everyone to dispose of their waste at a specified point.

“Residents then complained about people hiding behind the skip containers and committing various criminal activities, endangering the lives of anyone who got close to the containers. The container was then moved from the location.

“In Ext 78, waste collection is done on Wednesdays using a compactor truck. The municipality does not provide bins to residents, they use their own refuse bags. Bins are only provided to business owners and public facilitators such as schools and shops. Ext 44 waste collection is done on Monday and Tuesday using a compactor truck,” said Chuene.

“The municipality urges residents to put waste in refuse bags and put it on the sidewalk for collection on the above mentioned days.

“The identified illegal dumping site will be cleaned in fewer than three working days and more no dumping signs will be erected at the site and the site will be monitored by the municipality,” she said.
