SANBS blood drive: Volkswagen Polokwane vs Limpopo Toyota

Last week was a "bloody" week in the city when the personnel of Volkswagen Polokwane and Limpopo Toyoto took each other on to donate the most units of blood to the South African National Blood Service (SANBS).

POLOKWANE – Last Tuesday the Volkswagen team had their moment to shine and try to donate the most units. The Toyota team had their opportunity on Friday.

Yvonne George, Human Resource Manager and internal donor recruiter of Volkswagen Polokwane said she e-mailed all the personnel and put up posters to inform them of the time and date for the big day.

“I spoke to everyone to encourage and motivate them to be a part of this initiative and to help us win the ‘competition’. Some might even say I was a bit overbearing and bullied them,” she laughs.

“If they were afraid, I held their hand and encouraged them with a biscuit and juice. Our average unit donation went up from the previous blood drive and I am exceptionally proud of everyone who did their part in making the blood drive such an immense success.”

Bennie Khan from Limpopo Toyota is the main driving power behind recruiting people and encouraging them to donate blood at their blood drives. This time around he sent out SMS’s to the personnel to get them motivated to be a part of their blood drive competition against Volkswagen.

“Unfortunately we did not get a big response from people able to donate blood, but I am thankful for each and every one of them who made an effort to help save lives in our blood drive,” he said.

After the respective blood drives, Volkswagen Polokwane managed to donate 24 units and Limpopo Toyota were short on their heels with 16 units.

SANBS Public Relations Officer, Dottie Pinn, said she was thankful for their initiative in helping the SANBS to collect blood through their selfless donations.

“We greatly appreciate the community’s efforts in helping to boost the country’s blood supply. We cherish every drop of precious blood they so selflessly donate to help save lives. Thank you for taking the time to become a hero,” she said.
