Education is her calling

Charles Kuralt once said that "Good teachers know how to bring out the best in students" and Tammy Roger lives by that statement.

POLOKWANE – Tammy is the principal of Wonderland Pre-School and Foundation Phase and believes strongly in the power of education. She began her career in Johannesburg where she was a head of department at Bryanston Primary School and then moved to Polokwane where in 1994 she started teaching at Mitchell House in the Foundation Phase. Having a knack for business, Tammy always felt like she needed more in life and that is when she decided to buy the property which turned into Wonderland in 2001. “I have a business aptitude and I wanted something to call my own,” she says. Tammy says the fact that Wonderland has grown from around 70 learners to 300 learners leaves her feeling fulfilled. “The school has grown so much and I know I haven’t compromised on their (the learners) education.”

Tammy says that education is her calling saying that what she does is not just a job because she has such a great love for children. “I believe I’ve got a responsibility to sow morality into the children’s lives,” she says. With a well experienced staff, Tammy has ensured that the learners at Wonderland attain the highest standard of education saying that she is proud of the fact that many of her learners get accepted into some of the best schools in Polokwane. “We always tell our learners to take responsibility for their education by making sure they do their homework and understand what they have been taught.”

With her business savvy, Tammy says that they are hoping to buy more property in the future and see Wonderland going up to Grade 7.

When she is not working, you will find Tammy outdoors and she loves game viewing, art as well as travelling. She has traveled across the world, visiting Europe, New Zealand, the United States and she has also traveled around the country, however, she says that Europe is her favourite destination to travel.

Tammy says that if she wasn’t an educator she would be a business woman. “I wouldn’t be a business woman just for the money, yes it is part of it but it would be more for nurturing purposes, to see my business growing,” she says.
