Residents demand action to stop speeding in Rissik Street

The street has been singled out by residents as being one of the streets where most accidents occur because of speeding.

POLOKWANE – This is now a matter of concern for motorists and residents in the city and they urging the municipality to do something to stop or reduce the speeding in this street.

A three-year-old Jack Russell terrier was one of the latest victims of speeding in Rissik Street over the Easter weekend.

The dog, Molly, was walking with her 12-year-old owner, Tammy White, and her mother, Jo-Ann, when she pulled out of her leash and ran into the street where she was run over by an oncoming car.

“She just took off and because the car was driving down the street so fast there was no time for the vehicle to avoid the collision or to even stop,” a distraught White told Review.

The crossing between Rissik and Burger Street has seen its fair share of accidents in past months with one of the most recent being an accident between two vehicles where it was suspected to be caused by speeding motorists in this stretch.

The vehicle occupants did not sustain any serious injuries but both vehicles were considerably damaged by the collision.

The residents who live in Rissik Street and motorists who use the street demand that the municipality take action by either placing speed bumps in the road or looking into having traffic officials fine drivers for speeding in the area.

Polokwane Municipality Spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, said the municipality will investigate the cause of accidents in the street and see what action can be taken to reduce or completely avoid the situation.

In closing she said the municipality urges motorists to act responsibly when it comes to driving by obeying the rules of the road and that the municipality supports the national view of no tolerance towards speeding and reckless driving.
