Following more than three years of market research and exploratory discussions between departments and planning, the Limpopo Economic Development Agency (Leda) launched its brand new subsidiary company, Limpopo Connexion at Meropa Casino and Entertainment World on Tuesday.
The company’s vision is to transform Limpopo into a world-class knowledge society and it is resultant from organic organisational evolution and market led priorities, key among which is the centrality of information and communication technologies in ensuring that Limpopo is geared for and responsive to trends and development opportunities technology presents to the information society.
The event was attended by Economic Development, Environment and Tourism Seaparo Sekoati MEC and his Health counterpart, Pophi Ramathuba, members of the Premier’s Employment, Growth and Advisory Council, chairpersons of state owned companies, leaders of organised business and labour and representatives of research institutions and academia.
In his keynote address Sekoati said that continued advances in technological innovation and the production of new knowledge are critical to growth and people-centered development. “The Limpopo Development Plan strives to achieve these goals in transforming the provincial economy by creating job opportunities and reduce unemployment and societal inequality by the application of innovation interventions in this globally connected world,” Sekoati said and added that Limpopo Connexion is tasked to transform the province into a world class knowledge economy, develop Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as an economic sector and provide thought leadership through partnerships, collaboration and continuous innovation.
In addressing guests Leda Managing Director Ben Mphahlele said technology is a fundamental driving force that powers and regulates present day global commerce and a wide array of governance and development activities. “It is the backbone of systems automation, cost management and operational efficiencies. The birth of this new entity is therefore, a reflection on and a response to this multi-faceted premise and goes a step further in twinning incubation with project execution. Access to affordable broadband is an overdue and core milestone in leapfrogging connectivity as well as people and enterprise development in our province,” Mpahlele said.
