Joggers cautioned to not run alone

Polokwane Police are urging joggers in the city to avoid running alone during the early hours of the morning and late at night.

POLOKWANE – This comes after a lone jogger, Moses Mawetsi, went for a run in the early morning hours of Saturday, 26 March when he was mugged by armed men.

Mawetsi said he was on his regular early morning run when he was approached by an armed man close to the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital.

“The man demanded my cell phone and whatever else I was carrying with me. He said he would stab me and leave me for dead if I did not comply,” Mawetsi told Review.

Mawetsi said he handed over his music player and his cell phone to the robber following which the robber pushed him to the ground and ran away in the direction of Potgieter Avenue.

“I was in total shock and had to sit down for a couple of minutes to compose myself before asking one of the security guards at the hospital to send a message from his phone to my wife to come and pick me up.

Polokwane Police Spokesperson, Capt Ntobeng Phala, said no case has been opened at the police as of yet but police will look into maximising their presence on routes joggers are known to use. Phala advised residents to try and walk and run in groups to reduce the probability of an attack. He said lone runners or cyclists make easy targets.

“When you are in a group the chance of someone trying to rob you are greatly reduced,” Phala said.

No arrests have been made regarding the incident and police are still investigating the matter.
