Good protective clothes are important for bikers

When it comes to the safety of a motorcycle rider, one of the most important measures to take is to wear protective clothing

POLOKWANE – In most cases, a rider will start with a jacket that can protect them during a fall. These jackets typically include heavy padding on the elbows, spine and shoulders.

President of Sapa Yopa Motorcycle Club, Sarel Nong, told Review Bonus that besides helmets, none of the other gear that protects riders is mandatory and therefore it is important that riders know what to look for when buying protective clothing.

He prefers wearing a protective clothing set consisting of both biker pants and a jacket, as this not only looks good, but offers the same standard of protection all over.

According to Nong, there are many different brands and styles to choose from and what a rider chooses is up to him or her.

He said first-time buyers should look at a brand that is made of protective leather which is strong and not only moderately flexible but also lighter.

Nong said riders should get advice from their motorcycle dealers on what gear to buy.

Many cheaper protective clothing suits may require the rider to wear padded shorts underneath for added protection.

“Going cheap is not an option when buying protective clothing as the impact from a fall with clothing that does not give proper protection can lead to extremely serious injuries,” he said.

“Chest armor is a great idea for protection as well. It may be uncomfortable but it protects the heart, lungs and rib cage and have been the difference between life and death for a rider in an accident,” Nong said.
