Help us help you arrive safely – MEC of Transport

Road users can contact the department's call centre for traffic updates.

POLOKWANE – “Don’t ignore the traffic signs,” was the sage advice of Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana, the MEC of Transport shortly before the Easter weekend.

“To reduce the number of deaths on our roads require the collective and individual responsibility of all road users, motorists and pedestrians. Buckle up as you prepare to head off to your destinations and do not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Obey the road signs, especially regarding the speed limit. Pedestrians are not exempt from obeying the rules of the road and we need everyones cooperation to make the roads safer. Help us help you arrive safely at your Easter destination,” was Mokaba-Phukwana’s strong Easter message to road users.

Transport Spokesperson, Kagiso Mootane, said besides there being in the region of 100 drivers arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, 71 minibus drivers were confiscated and charged for overloading.

“Our law enforcement officers will be out in full force this Easter weekend. We are combat ready and already monitoring the increasing traffic flow, especially on the roads leading to Moria,” he said.

Mootane said road users can contact the department’s call centre at 0800 0066 94 for traffic updates. He reminded motorists that the R512 between Thabazimbi and Bela Bela is under construction. “Motorists are advised to practise patience and obey the temporary signs and construction workers when approaching these points,” he exhorted.

Mokaba-Phukwana concurred with the Limpopo Police’s zero tolerance stance and said traffic officers will show no mercy to traffic-law violators.
