Newspaper article angers Westenburg residents

“Juvenile Time Bomb -  A Forgotten Generation”. This is the headline to a story a local newspaper wrote about young people in Westenburg

POLOKWANE – The article was however, met with anger by Westenburg residents, who took to social media to express themselves.

The residents demanded a public apology from the editor and the journalist who wrote the story, claiming that the journalist wrote the story without facts, and took pictures of children without their parents’ consent.

“I am sure the publication made a few sales with their article to boost their bottom line. Rest assured, you have not shaken us as Westenburgers. You can come again and take as much pictures as you want and write as much c@#* as you want. We are normal people living in a normal society. Maybe try to understand us, then only will you know what I am taking about. I have learned  that a picture only depend on how you look at it and what is your perception about it. When I look at these pictures published in the paper, I see a happy society,” one of the resident said.

He added that for children to play outside was normal, and for older sisters or brothers to look after their younger siblings or carry them on the back while mommy try to make a living was 100% normal.

“Maybe the journalist and her bosses can invest some of their profits in our community so that the youth can have something to do like sports and entertainment, then the very same journalist won’t complain about children smoking hubbly or going to a park,” he said.

Another resident agreed and said the story was false and only written to make a quick buck.

“It’s people like this journalist that gives Westenburg a bad name and not the people of Westenburg.”
