14 awaiting prisoners escape from police cells

The provincial police commissioner, Lt Genl Fanie Masemola has launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the escape of 14 awaiting trial prisoners

LIMPOPO – Held in Modimolle, the prisoners escaped this afternoon.

Provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, said the escapees made their gateway after they sawed through mesh wires of the exercise room of the cells.

“None of the escapees have been rearrested and the community is requested to assist the police with any information that might lead to their arrest,” said Otto.

She said some of the escapees were considered armed and dangerous, and urged the community not to confront them.

“The community is urged to contact their nearest police station or to call 08600 10111 with any information,” she said.

Masemola said the incident was viewed in an extremely serious light.

“Should our investigation expose any negligence or involvement from police officers, there will be no hesitation to take harsh disciplinary steps, which would include dismissal from the SAPS,” he said.

He said the priority for now was to capture the escapees.
