Storytelling celebrates power of the written word

The department of education in partnership with Nal’ibali celebrated World Read Aloud Day (WRAD) on Friday

POLOKWANE – WRAD is an annual celebration on the last Wednesday of February, and this year’s celebration was held at the district department of education’s computer hall in Ladanna.

The day was celebrated by reading aloud and with storytelling to honour the empowerment that comes with the power of the written word and literacy.

There were a lot of people who attended the celebration, which included primary school leaners from different circuits within the district, officials from the district and provincial offices of the department of education and language teachers.

Director Mothemane, director for the department’s Capricorn district encouraged parents to buy more books for their children and to motivate children to read books.

“A winning nation is a reading nation,” Mothemane said.

Deputy chief education specialist in English, Stanley Makgahlela, said the department embraced WRAD and all its activities and would continue to campaign and advocate for transformational literacy in all languages of the province through WRAD.

“We commend Nal’ibali and Capricorn district for their efficient partnership and urge them to spread the message to other districts and local municipalities  because at the moment, illiteracy is a devastating national challenge. We thus call on all other NGOs with the same agenda as Nal’ibali to join in and transform our communities. We are saying, together we can do more in our mission to root out illiteracy,” Makgahlela said.
