Municipal employees make decision to down tools

The Mogalakwena Municipality has been brought to a standstill on Thursday morning for the third time since December.

MOKOPANE – The municipal employees wrote a letter to Mayor Parks Sebatjane, stating:“Honourable Mayor, we as the workers of the Mogalakwena Municipality have decided to put our tools down as a protest against the unfair labour practice we are subjected to. For over five years we have requested that our demand for bench-marking of salaries against municipalities of the same grading system be implemented, but on each occasion our plea has fallen on deaf ears.”

They concluded the letter by saying: “We urge you as the political leader of this municipality to guide council in taking a decision that serves in the interest of the workers. Until our demand for implementation of bench-marking from March is met, we will remain on our course of self-emancipation until you come and address us as your workers,” signed the disgruntled workers of Mogalakwena Municipality.

The Acting Municipal Manager, Markus Mthombeni, told Bosveld on Friday morning: “This is not a complete standstill, myself and my secretary are at work as we speak, for me it is business as usual. “ He further said: “I appeal to the residents of Mokopane to please stay calm as we are in the process of obtaining a court interdict stating that the workers should return to work as this is an illegal gathering.”
