Man arrested for failure to appear in court

A 30-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for being in contempt of court, after he failed to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate's Court twice for a common assault and malicious damage to property charge against him

POLOKWANE –

The man was out on bail for this case and after his second non-appearance a warrant of arrest was issued.

He was sentenced to six months imprisonment for the contempt of court charge against him.

Aside from the common assault and malicious damage to property charges against him, the man also faces a charge of theft by false pretences.

Const Matimba Maluleke, Mankweng police spokesperson, said the man pretended to be a police officer investigating a case of the  theft of money.

“He would approach his victims telling them that they must give him their money as evidence for the case and disappear. He also pretended to be a manager of a business, promising students from the University of Limpopo jobs if they paid him a fee. After receiving the money, he disappeared,” Maluleke said.

The Mankweng police appeal to residents who have been victimised by the suspect to report to the police station to identify him.

The man’s next court appearance will be on 11 March.
