Parents could be fined for keeping kids out of school

In recent weeks, there have been reports of learners staying out of school to be part of protest action in their communities

POLOKWANE – Two of the most recent incidents are of learners in Mankweng and Flora Park Comprehensive High School learners.

In Mankweng, learners missed more than two weeks of school in the first term and returned to school after a meeting with the department of education.

Education spokesperson Dr Naledzani Rasila, said the MEC met with parents to inform them that they could be prosecuted by the law.

“Parents must understand that they are bound by law to keep learners in schools. Education is the platform that this country is build on and that is why there is a law in place to protect the education of learners,” Rasila said.

He said parents who kept learners out of schools could face hefty fines.

Section 3 of the South African Schools Act 84 of 1996 and Education Laws Amendment Act 100 of 1997 states that:

• Parents are not allowed to keep children out of schools.
