The South African Local Government Association’s (Salga) 2016 Finance Week will be hosted in Phalaborwa on 23 and 24 February with the theme “The Year for Advancing People’s Power through Prudent Financial Management”.
Participants will include Executive Mayors or Mayors, Finance Portfolio Chairpersons and Councillors, Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) Chairpersons, Municipal Managers, Chief Financial Officers, Chief Audit Executives or Audit Managers and Chief Risk Officers.
Thapelo Matlala, Provincial Executive Officer of Salga says it is important to acknowledge that municipalities deliver quality basic services in a very dynamic and challenging environment. Through this programme, Salga aims to seek the cooperation of all social partners in ensuring that it creates an enabling environment for municipalities to accelerate service delivery further.
“Primarily, the Finance Week will adopt programmatic action to respond to Presidential directives emanating from the State of the Nation Address. The meeting will also consider implications of the National Budget speech. Further to that, municipalities would also utilise the Finance Week platform to position their IDP and budgets in such a manner that they respond fully to all the marching orders coming from the Premier’s State of the Province Address,” Matlala explained.
Salga’s mandate is to represent, promote and protect the interests of local government, to lobby and advocate for member municipalities and to act as a resource for knowledge and information to municipalities.
In its role of representing and supporting members, Salga provides a platform for municipalities to raise their issues, exchange views and to share experiences and best practices.
