Westenburg bishop released on R5000 bail

The Westenburg bishop who is being investigated for sexual assault has been released on R5 000 bail.

POLOKWANE – The Westenburg bishop who is being investigated for sexual assault has been released on R5 000 bail.

This comes after he was arrested last Thursday and the case postponed to Tuesday for a bail application after his first appearance on Friday.

The bishop was arrested after four separate cases of sexual assault were opened against him by women in the Westenburg community and a fifth case opened in the week that he was arrested.

He appeared before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday where his bail application was accepted.

The bishop’s son declined to comment on the matter and referred Review to his father’s attorney, Lott Ramusi.

Ramusi confirmed the bishop’s release on R5 000 bail but refused to say what his bail conditions were.

“The magistrate said the press may not publish details of the bail application as it may compromise the case against my client,” he said.
