Community leader’s family escapes death

Angry residents in Ga-Podile outside Burgersfort torched community leader, George Lesenya's (56) home and his two cars last Wednesday

LIMPOPO – According to Mecklenburg police Spokesperson, Const Kgalake Mampuru, the angry residents alleged Lesenya’s wife, Mmaneng, is a witch who is terrorising their village.

“Lesenya was at church in Podungwane with his wife when he received a call from the community policing forum (CPF) telling him a group of young people went to the royal house to report his wife as a witch, but the royal family dismissed their concerns. The very same evening at around 19:00 the group gathered at Lesenya’s home where they started chanting and set his house and two vehicles alight. Damage to his property is estimated to be in the region of R1 million,” said Mampuru.

He said Lesenya arrived at his home shortly after he received the call and managed to escape with his family to a nearby village. Lesenya confirmed no one was injured during the attack.

“The police investigations are still ongoing regarding the incident,” Mampuru said.
