Limpopo’s top ten academic achievers in last year’s National Senior Certificate results were recently treated to a special evening at Meropa Casino and Entertainment World by the Domba Trust.
The Domba Trust is an investor in Meropa Casino and Entertainment World and with the funds that trustees manage, the trusts focuses on developing education and health, as well as arts and culture in the province.
After a rousing welcoming performance by a local drumming and dance group, ETV Group, the achievers joined Education MEC Ishmael Kgetjepe, Domba Trust trustees, and representatives of the Department of Education for an evening of celebration where each achiever received a certificate of merit from the trust. Guests and achievers were pleasantly surprised when Domba Trustee, Mish Mogale announced that each of the top ten achievers would also receive R10 000.
“This is the first time that Domba Trust decided to reward Limpopo’s top Matric achievers, but we plan to make it an annual event,” he said. “You are not children any more. You need to make adult decisions. That is why we are paying the R10 000 into your bank accounts and trust that you will use it well,” Mogale said addressing the achievers.
Fellow trustee, Mashudu Tshivhase, said the young achievers had a responsibility to ensure that South Africa takes its rightful place on the world stage. “We will be there every step of the way to support you,” he promised.
He warned the youngsters that common sense is not always good sense and said they should never be afraid to be different. He used IT billionaire Bill Gates as an example to show that visionaries who dare to be different often change the world.
In his keynote address, Kgetjepe said the achievers showed their peers that there was no elevator to success, but rather a steep staircase that had to be climbed.
“I am sure that there were times that you hated working so hard and wanted to give up, but you did not and now you enjoy the sweet fruit of your success. I ask of you to go back to your local communities and inspire others to do the same.”
Kgetjepe thanked every teacher and parent involved in the lives of the achievers and said their contributions were sometimes overlooked, but never underappreciated. He ended the evening’s proceedings with some wisdom for the achievers.
“Life is a voyage of tests and tribulation, touch decisions and choices. Stay committed to your values, but be flexible in your approach.”
