Police officer shot in the head during hijacking

An off duty police officer was shot in the head while trying to intervene in a hijacking in Lebowakgomo

LIMPOPO – An off duty Warrant Officer attached to the Lebowakgomo police station was shot in the head last night when he intervened in a hijacking.

WO Phetole Moses Ramolefo (48) was still in uniform when he took his vehicle to a car wash around 19:00.

Provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, said four unknown suspects wearing balaclavas hijacked a brand new bakkie belonging to an employee from the nearby store.

“Ramolefo went to assist, but in the process was shot in the head. Fortunately, the bullet grazed his forehead and he was not critically injured,” said Otto.

The suspects robbed him of his firearm and fled the scene. No arrests have been made yet and the hunt for the suspects as well as the hijacked vehicle continues, added Otto.

The Provincial Police Commissioner Lt Genl Fannie Masemola visited the scene, as well as Ramolefo in hospital.

He vowed that the police would use all the available resources to trace and hunt down the suspects.
