Two traffic officials from Polokwane Municipality appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Wednesday)to apply for bail after they were arrested on Friday on charges of corruption.
Rendani Ndou and Avhashoni Mampwe were arrested after they fell into a trap set by a learner driver and the Police.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto said the complainant recently visited the municipal traffic department in Ladanna to be tested for his learner driver’s licence. Mampwe, having tested the candidate, allegedly demanded R2 500, purportedly to ensure the candidate a successful pass. The candidate reportedly said he had already paid the same amount to the driving school. Mampwe allegedly insisted that the money be paid to which the learner driver then agreed but immediately reported the incident to the Police. A trap was then set.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the results of the test given to the learner driver, which indicated that he had failed, differed from the ones on the system which indicated that he had passed, says Otto.
Polokwane Municipality’s Marketing and Communications Manager, Tidimalo Chuene confirmed the incident but was not able to give formal comment. “The matter has not been discussed by management yet and when it comes to criminal cases it is best to revert to the Police,” she said.
