Efforts by businesses, individuals and organisations to collect water for residents of drought stricken areas are gaining momentum countrywide and locally Eagle’s Nest Christian School has issued a challenge to everyone, including schools, to designate a space as a water drop-off box where people can donate water for consumption by humans and livestock.
Eagle’s Nest spokesperson, Frouwine Mare said the school is working in conjunction with Water Shortage SA, who collects and distribute water for persons and organisations such as old age homes and hospitals. Collection points where water can be dropped are at Waltons Stationery, Engen Petroshop at the corner of Webster and Marshall Street, Eagle’s Nest or the City Bus Shuttle.
Containers or bottles should be marked DW for drinking water or TW for tap water that will go to livestock.
Mare said water collected by businesses and schools can be collected should you call 015 263 6068 and will be distributed to affected areas in Giyani, Ga-Mothiba and areas around Mookghopong and Mookerong. They plan to deliver the first truck load in mid-February and then every week thereafter.
“Bottles and containers are also needed, as well as bulk containers such as JoJo tanks, as there are farmers who offered bulk water supplies, but we do not have the means to package it. We do have farmers willing to transport the water to water-scarce areas,” Mare said.
Other businesses who started drop-off depots in the city and nearby are Crown Seeds, Spar Hoedspruit and the Iron Crown Restaurant in Haenertsburg.
The initiative has just started and is expected to gain momentum.
