POLOKWANE- Hendi Erwee, a renowned make up artist in Polokwane recently revealed her trade secrets to Review when she showed one of our journalists how to get the perfect smokey eye effect for those nights out on the town or that special date or a Christmas party.
We have complied a 6 ½ minute soundclip for you to listen to while sitting in front of the mirror and applying your make-up. If you have problem following below is step by step guide.
Here is a step by step guide on how to get that perfect smokey eye.
- Start by making a shadow on your eyelid to that you blend in dark and light colours together. Work from the outside to the inside in the fold of the eye.
- Colour has to blend from the outside to the inside. Work in circular motions to blend the make up in perfectly.
- Use a small amount of black eyeshadow on the line of your eye to redefine your eye shape. This creates the “smokey” effect.
- Use a sponge to blend the liner in so that it doesn’t end up smudging through the night.
TIP: Set the liner with some powder – for a longer lasting effect.
- Use the same black powder on your lower lid instead of an eye pencil and work from the outside only putting powder halfway as not to overload the eye with the smokey effect.
TIP: Once the eye is done, use a white powder in the corner of your eye to highlight it and open up the eye.
- Make sure you blend in your make up to make the effect softer and more feminine.
- Apply your blush before putting on your mascara. Have all your powdered make up applied first so that you don’t end up with powder on your mascara brush. Apply blush to the ‘apple’ of your cheek. Use a natural colour to blend in with your skin colour.
TIP: “If you have applied too much, you can down play it by applying more powder,” says Hendi
- Eyebrows are also important to highlight. Apply a colour closer to your eyebrow colour to accentuate the shape and colour. You can use an eyeliner pencil but make sure that the pencil doesn’t touch the roots.
TIP: Day make-up must be as natural as possible, accentuate yourself but don’t overdo it. Evening make-up can be more dramatic, darker an bigger
- Next, you apply mascara, working from the root of the lash upwards, wiggling the brush so it applies evenly. Hendi says that you can never apply too much mascara, just make sure that it is neatly applied.
- With regards to lips, if you are doing a smokey eye, it is important to use a natural lip colour so that it creates a natural look.
- Start with a lip liner, lining the lips to give a fuller effect and makes the lipstick last longer.
- You can apply the liner all over the lip instead of using a lipstick and then apply a lip gloss over that making sure that you blend everything together. This can be done by using a lip brush.
