Schools raise funds to help children with cancer

POLOKWANE – Karin Adlem, Pemps Gr R principal, handed over a cheque of R14 000 to Tough Living with Cancer (TLC) facilitator, Bobby Were, on Thursday.

“The children in TLC ward at the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital won my heart when I first met them. I promised then to do something to help them,”says Adlem.

She came up with an initiative to raise funds through selling yellow ribbons and allowing Gr R learners to wear casual clothes to school on specific days, a privilege for which they each had to pay.

During a TLC patient care and terminal support workshop in February, Adlem proposed the idea to raise funds to a few other schools.

“They agreed, and learners took it upon themselves to help us sell as many ribbons as possible. We thank everyone for their support,” she said.

Were was very appreciative of the donation and said it will be used to build lockable storage units.

He highlighted that 90% of cancer in children can be successfully treated if diagnosed early.
