Women’s movement gathers in prayer

On the eve of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women that would have been observed yesterday (Wednesday), the Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa (PWMSA) in the Capricorn District united an audience of mostly women for a mass prayer in Polokwane on Monday.
The occasion was in support of a programme against violence and abuse of women, children and the elderly. In the original invitation issued by ANCWL Peter Mokaba Regional Secretary Betty Kgare, it was mentioned that the mass prayer was prompted by an incident in Blouberg leading to a child being killed and the removal of the private parts, a child disappearing in Polokwane before being found dead in Swadini later and an elderly woman being killed by her grandson at Aganang.
The prayer session was used as an opportunity to support the nationwide campaign of 16 days of activism against violence against women and children.
In defiance of a host of societal ills, women’s voices rose against drug and alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy, violence against women, the killing of children and their mothers as well as against HIV and Aids.
