Units a tribute to his dad

Jacobus Engelbrecht has saved more than 800 lives with the 212 units of blood he has thus far donated.

POLOKWANE – Jacobus Engelbrecht has saved more than 800 lives with the 212 units of blood he has thus far donated.

Engelbrecht says he started donating blood when he was 18-years-old and still in school.

He credits his father who encouraged him to be a regular donor just like he used to be.

“My father passed away due to cancer and at the time of his death he had already donated 175 units – it was still a bit short of his target of 275. I took it upon myself to help him ‘reach’ that target and in the process also save lives. I know it makes my father happy where he is,” he adds.

According to Engelbrecht it feels like he pays tribute to his late dad every 56 days when he donates blood.

Engelbrecht is committed to saving as many lives as he can and making his dad’s dream come true. “By the grace of God, I have gained more strength and that brings joy to my heart. I’m grateful that my blood is O-positive which means it fits in anywhere, anyone can use it,” he explains.

He has also convinced many people to become blood donors as far as Richard’s Bay, Marble Hall and in other areas.

It fits in nicely with his own life motto: to give and never stop.

“I wish my children can also follow in my and their granddad’s footsteps and become donors and heroes and heroines.

“Saving one life is a lot and God notices your good deeds, so lets bleed to save someone out there,” he concludes.

Engelbrecht’s dedication and willingness have paid off as he recently received an Outstanding Award from the South African Blood Service for donating more than 200 units of blood.
