LIMPOPO – Eleven cows were struck by lightning in Tshaulu near Thohoyandou on Saturday, leaving Sara Kwinda, an unemployed mother of nine, devastated.

Kwinda, who inherited the cattle from her late husband, said seven of the dead cattle were expectant.

“A bull and a calf survived the horror. As I rely on subsistence farming, I sell cattle for a living and also to pay my children’s school fees.

“I was happy that the rain was going to revive the grazing land and bring water, but just one flash of lightning left my family in dire straits.

“While I stood and trembled from shock among the lifeless bodies of my cattle, I received a phone call informing me that my three-roomed house had been damaged by the storm,” she said.

“I will appreciate it if the Vhembe District Municipality’s disaster management office helps me,” Kwinda said.
