Drastic change could be effected at Limpopo municipalities in future if the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of the African National Congress (ANC) in the province sees through its intention to immediately intervene in the affairs of the institutions upon receipt of a commissioned audit report into issues of management, finances, service delivery and governance.
Polokwane Observer was informed that governance within municipal structures across the province ranked highest among the areas for audit.
In an earlier statement issued after a meeting of the PEC in Mokopane on Monday, ANC Provincial Secretary Nocks Seabi stressed that while the majority of Limpopo’s municipalities were performing well the PEC has resolved to make timely intervention whenever any of the municipalities showed signs of distress. “(The) PEC is going to make immediate and necessary intervention based on audit reports and other government assessment tools,” Seabi emphasised.
Following up the matter with ANC Provincial Media Liaison Officer Aluwani Netsianda, Polokwane Observer was informed that the PEC was awaiting a report by an audit committee appointed by the leadership of the ANC in the province earlier this year. The report was due to be presented to the next PEC meeting, for which no date had been set as yet, he indicated. It was the continuation of an earlier audit and the leadership was of the opinion that it should be done annually, Netsianda said.
Other matters that received attention during the PEC meeting included preparations for the 2016 local government elections. Seabi was further quoted as saying the PEC has noted the outstanding progress made thus far. He referred to the organisation in Limpopo having established election task teams in all regions and branches and that nomination processes for candidates were well on course. He expressed confidence about retaining and increasing their comfortable majority lead.
At the same time there was mention of the PEC resolving that there would be no debate in the province about the 2017 leadership succession for the time being. “We will therefore debate this matter at an appropriate time.”
