LIMPOPO – The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development MEC, Joyce Matshoge, has urged farm owners throughout the province to reduce their livestock by selling them as this can save them from losing their herds.

She said selling a few animals and saving the money will help farmers to buy their herds back when the rain comes.

“As Limpopo continues to experience a terrible drought, small farm owners have reported hundreds of livestock that have died due to the rising heat every day and a lack of water. I’m worried about this drought,” she said.

She said to alleviate this scourge, the department is putting interim measures in place. “The department is going to draw money from other budget votes and assist by increasing the boreholes, and also fence areas that need to be fenced,” Matshoge said.

“The communities must continue using water sparingly and avoid making firebreaks by burning the grass,” she said.
