Suspects threaten, tie-up children in armed robbery

The three daughters of a well-known businessman were detained and threatened with a firearm last Thursday during an armed robbery in their house.

MOKOPANE – The three daughters of a well-known businessman were detained and threatened with a firearm last Thursday during an armed robbery in their house.

The three suspects fled with R78 000, five cellphones, a laptop and a camera.

“Their timing was perfect and in my opinion they were watching the house,” well-known businessman, Ibrahim Mahomedy (45), told Bosveld after the suspects broke into his house in Nymania Street.

Mahomedy said: “I left for work at around 14:00 and my wife and sister in-law attended the weekly ladies prayer on a Thursday between 15:30 and 16:30.

“Only my three daughters of 20, 18 and 13 years were at home with the two domestic workers when the suspects gained access to the house.”

According to one of the workers she saw the suspects running through the backyard and before she could blink they pointed a firearm at her and told her to be quiet.

The suspects then demanded to know who wass in the house and where are they.

Mahomedy said one of the suspects had a firearm and the two others had knives with which they threatened his daughters to be quiet, tied them up together in one of the bedrooms and demanded to know where the money is.

“My daughters told them they are too young and do not know.”

After searching the house the suspects took off with the money, five cell phones, a laptop and a camera.

“My 12-year-old daughter came home from school not expecting anything when she heard her sisters call her. When she saw them all tied-up she ran to the Islamic school across from our house and informed my son in-law and daughter who are teachers at the school.

“They did not understand what she was saying as she was crying hysterically. They immediately phoned me and I rushed home to find the police already on the scene. I am truly grateful that no one got hurt and that my children are save. They are all still very traumatised.”

Hendrik Masimene, a reaction-officer from Suricat Armed Response, said he was patrolling the area in Akasia when he was stopped by residents who told him about the robbery. “I immediately phoned the control room to call the police and when I arrived at the house the suspects had already left.”

Const Irene Masingi, spokesperson for the Mokopane Police Station, told Bosveld no arrests has yet been made and a thorough investigation is ongoing.
