Diwali celebrates the victory of light over darkness

POLOKWANE – Diwali is an annual Hindu festival which celebrates the victory of light over darkness.

Generally known as the Festival of Light, Diwali marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year.

Millions of people around the world of the Hindu religion celebrate Diwali by exchanging gifts, setting off fireworks and enjoying festive meals.

The festival is celebrated to honour Rama-chandra, the seventh avatar (incarnation of the god Vishnu). It is believed that on this day, Rama returned to his people after 14 years of exile in which he won a battle against the demons and the demon king, Ravana. The people then lit their houses to celebrate his victory over evil.

Hindu’s also believe the goddess of happiness and good fortune, Lakshmi, roams the earth on the day of Diwali.

Diwali celebrations may vary in different countries, but its significance and spiritual meaning is generally the awareness of the inner light. As the festival symbolises the lifting of spiritual darkness; lamps, fireworks and bonfires are an integral part of the celebrations.
