Lim police investigate 2 mob justice incidents

'People are warned not to take the law into their own hands. If there is something that is giving them problems, they must report it to the police'

LIMPOPO – A case of arson has been opened after a headman from the Elim area was forced to flee after an angry mob torched his house on Sunday.

Spokesperson for the Vuwani police, Const Ntsundeni Mungadi, said the residents of Tshitungulwane and Manavhela were worked up over the 50-year-old headman’s leadership style.

“The headman is in hiding at an unidentified place of safety of his own choosing. No injuries were reported by the headman or his family during the incident,” Mungadi said.

“We have opened an arson case but no arrests have been made yet. People are warned not to take the law into their own hands. If there is something that is giving them problems, they must report it to the police,” Mungadi stated.

Meanwhile, the police in Thohoyandou opened a murder case after a 24-year-old man was stoned to death in a mob justice incident in Mbilwi village.

Spokesperson for the Thohoyandou police, Const Avhafarei Tshiovhe said residents blamed various crimes in the area on the murdered man.

“They stoned him to death following which another victim ran to the police for assistance. No arrests have been made,” Tshiovhe said.
