Elements of optimism about South Africa’s future and the need for unity within the ruling party and alliance partner ranks dominated the message of African National Congress (ANC) Treasurer-General Zweli Mkhize when he addressed an audience during a working dinner hosted by the ANC in Limpopo on Thursday evening.
The evening affair was held on the first of Mkhize’s two days in Limpopo. His visit made provision for meetings with, among others, the provincial leadership of the ANC and its alliance partners, the Provincial Working Committee (PWC) of the ruling party, the finance committee of the ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC), treasurers of regions and sub-regions of the organisation, business representatives, community-based structures and other relevant stakeholders.
Mkhize’s keynote address during the event at Protea Hotel Ranch Resort outside Polokwane was largely interspersed with references to last week’s mass countrywide student uprisings demanding fees to fall, dealing with the current economic situation and equity, the National Development Plan, concern about violence around strikes, the necessity to take a stance against corruption, building of a cohesive nation as well as peace, stability and reconciliation. He simultaneously touched on modernisation of the ANC.
In his speech Mkhize mentioned that he was primarily in the province to promote the Progressive Business Forum and the Progressive Citizens’ Forum programme, facilitating dialogue between the ANC and business and contributing subscribers respectively. He indicated that financial literacy among treasurers within party structures was also a matter under discussion and stressed that the ANC took sound financial issues very seriously.
Welcome remarks were rendered by ANC Peter Mokaba Region Chairperson Motalane Monakedi, the introduction of the Treasurer-General by recently elected ANC Provincial Treasurer Danny Msiza and the vote of thanks by ANC Provincial Secretary Nocks Seabi.
