Popular American Rhythm and Blues singer Joe Thomas is expected to perform in the province for the first time when he goes on stage at at the 12th annual Mapungubwe Jazz and Heritage Festival scheduled for 12 December.
Thomas will be joined by a crop of South African musicians including PJ Powers, Jack Parow, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Snotkop, Hugh Masekela, Nathi Nuyelakhaya, AKA, Casper Nyovest, Lira, Oliver Mutukuzi, The Soil and Tho­mas Chauke.
Spokesperson for the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Malasela Ramaoka said they are pleased with the artists they have secured for the event and they are looking forward to a memorable event.
Limpopo Arts and Culture Youth Forum (Lacyf), which in the past demanded that local artists not be excluded from the festival programme, are hoping that some of their members will be included in this year’s line up. “We have already sent a proposal to the Head of the Department regarding the issue and they have promised that they will work with us,” Lacyf Chairperson, Romeo Ramuada said.
Ramaoka also mentioned that local artists will have an opportunity to perform at the event. “We have not yet finalised the list of local artists but we want to give every artist in the province an opportunity to take part in the event.”
