No space in school for local kids, only outsiders

Nirvana parents are up in arms because there is no space available for their kids in Nirvana Primary School's Grade 1 classes for next year.

POLOKWANE – Nirvana parents are up in arms because there is no space available for their kids in Nirvana Primary School’s Grade 1 classes for next year.

The parents claimed they submitted their applications early to avoid disappointment, but still their children were not accepted.

According to the parents children from areas outside of Nirvana were accepted at the school resulting in no space for their offspring.

“The school is here to accommodate children from Nirvana first, not children from other areas. It is unfair that applications of children from Seshego, Moletjie and the Extensions were accepted, but almost 90% of those for Nirvana children were not accepted.

“This is not desirable or right and we demand that space is made for our children who live in the area. Why can children from outside Nirvana not attend school in their areas where there are schools for them to apply for.

“Now that they have been accepted at Nirvana Primary School we want to know where are we supposed to take our children to?” an angry parent asked.

Gr.1 enrollment for 2016

An inside source revealed to Review no Gr 1 learners were enrolled at Nirvana Primary School for 2016, only Gr R learners who are already registered at the school.

“This year’s Gr R learners will automatically move on to Gr 1 in 2016 and that is why there are no new admissions for Gr 1 for next year.

“Parents are advised to enroll their children already for Gr R to ensure they get a place in Gr 1 the following year,” the source explained.

Dr Naledzani Rasila, senior communication manager for the Department of Education, said the department’s policy allows for learners to be registered in schools in their area as long as space is available there.

“It will be a surprise if all Nirvana children were not accepted but only those applications from outside. If this is the case it is against the policy of the department.

“Parents can contact their circuit office in this regard. The school and the circuit will take them through steps to follow-up.

“Parents whose children were not accepted must not rest on their laurels but are advised to continue seeking place at other schools,” Rasila added.
