LIMPOPO – A hunting trip ended tragically on a game farm in Namakgale when a 24-year-old man was mauled by lions on Wednesday.
According to provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, Matome Mahlale was part of a group of five young men who went hunting on a nearby game farm with their dogs.
“The men were hunting illegally and in the process came across two lions who charged at them,” said Otto.
Three men managed to climb into a tree, while another managed to escape, but the deceased and two dogs were mauled by the lions, said Otto.
“The man in the tree managed to escape when the lions left. Some dogs survived.”
Asked if the lions were still on the loose, Otto said the lions were the property of the owners of the game farm.
Otto said an inquest by the Namakgale police was underway.
