Edu dept says they are ready for exams

As thousands of gr. 12 learners across the country gear up for their national senior certificate examinations, Umalusi says they are worried about inadequate resources in Limpopo

POLOKWANE – As thousands of gr. 12 learners across the country gear up for their national senior certificate examinations, Umalusi says although they are confident that preparations are in order, they are worried about inadequate resources in Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal.

The national senior certificate examinations start on 19 October with a commuter applications tech practical examination, while written examinations will start on Monday, 26 October with English paper 1.

Umalusi, whose role is to ensure fairness and credibility when it comes to annual examinations, plans to embark on another visit to all provinces to ensure everything is on track.

With reports of inadequate resources, Review spoke to Dr Naledzani Rasila, senior manager of communication services at the department of education, who said the province was ready for the national senior certificate examinations.

“There are 102 633 registered full-time learners and 16 104 part-time repeat candidates who will write the examinations in a total of 1 693 centres across the province,” said Rasila.

He also stated that the department did not have any threats of papers leaking and had never experienced such in the past.

Review also spoke to several high schools in the city about their plans with regards to the upcoming examinations. Most of the schools told Review that official statements would to be made through the department, but that they were all prepared and relied on the department for things to run smoothly.
