MOKOPANE – “This is only the first step in our journey to success,”

Nkele Selemela (25) and Malesela Makhafola (23) are both born and raised in Mokopane and today they are intern-geologists at Ivanplats mine.

Bosveld was first introduced to Selemela and Makhafola during the Mokopane Primary School Career Day where both of them gave an inspiring speech of where they came from and their achievements. They agreed to also motivate our readers with their story.

Where did you matriculate and at what university did you obtain your degree?

Malesela: I matriculated at Hoërskool Piet Potgieter in 2010 and obtained my degree and honours in BSc geology in four years at the University of the Free State.

Selemela: In 2007 I received my Gr 12 certificate from Ramogabudi High School and within six years I obtained my three degrees. The first one being BSc environmental and geographical science from the University of Cape Town; the second and third being BSc applied geology and BSc (honours) applied geology both from the University of Western Cape.

Why did you decide to study geology?

Malesela: Growing up in Mokopane I have always been fascinated by the mining industry and at that time the engineering route was not quite my scene and I want to be part of the action outside in the field. In Gr 10 we took a trip to East London to attend a National Science Week where scientist introduced us to a variety of fields.

I remember the presentation regarding geology blew me away and I knew from that very moment that I want to become a geologist.

Selemela: You can say I was literally groomed for geology. In Gr 7 Anglo American Platinum blessed me with a scholarship to attend extra math and science classes starting in my Gr 8 year. I always thought of myself as Dr Selemela but after being introduced to geology in Gr 9, I immediately knew this is what I was destined to become. After Gr 12 I worked as a trainee in geology for Anglo American for a year and that experience just reassured me of my decision.

Geology is certainly not the easiest of courses. Did you ever feel like quitting?

Malesela: Oh yes, at one point giving up sounded much easier than pulling through, but I told myself that nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘im-possible’, he said with a smile. Without the support of my parents, Mosibudi and Tema, and the faith I had in the Lord, I would not be half the person I am today. I am very grateful for the opportunity they gave me to further my studies.

Selemela: In my final year of obtaining my degree in environmental science and geography, my bursary got suspended and as a result I was in a financial struggle. I told myself that I have come this far I cannot give up now and with the support of my parents, Regina and Albert, I just learned once again that where there is a will, there is a way.

This is your first year out in the field, what is the nicest part of your career?

Malesela: To work in the mining industry is like working in another world. I form part of a team that solves some of the word’s problems. Without mines, how would our beautiful country sustain itself economically?

Selemela: If I can be out in the field working with rocks, I am happy. To apply my knowledge I have obtained at varsity brings me joy.

What is your future goals for the next five years?

Malesela: My end goal is to become a rock engineer. I want to gain as much experience in the field as possible and I definitely plan on growing within the company.

Selemela: I want to gain experience in all fields of geology that will enable me to run a project and to supervise a team. I am also still deciding between obtaining my masters degree or studying something like project management to give my career a boost.

What advice do you have for the younger generation?

Malesela: If you are uncertain about either taking the educational route or following your passion, rather take the educational route and find a way to combine your passion with your teachings, it is a safe choice. If you are a risk-taker, follow your heart, trust in the Lord, do your best and He will do the rest, also keep an open mind to all possibilities.

Selemela: Work hard, find something that motivates you, for instance in my case, I am the first one in my family to go to varsity and to obtain a degree. Do not let money stand in your way, there are bursaries and financial aid, you just have to apply yourself.

These two people are very ambitious and a true inspiration.
