LIMPOPO – A 30-year-old bank employee, who was on the run from the police after he allegedly stole an amount estimated at over R2 million had his case postponed for formal bail application to Monday, 28 September when he briefly appeared before the Groblersdal district court last Wednesday.

The state opposed bail and recommended he be remanded in police custody citing reasons that the suspect threatened to commit suicide.

WO Stanley Magaela, Groblersdal police spokesperson, said Mamiala handed himself over at the Groblersdal police station after he had been on the run since June when the bank he was working for discovered the theft.

“The information at the police’s disposal is that part of the suspect’s duties was to load money into auto teller machines (ATMs). Instead of loading the money the suspect allegedly took some of it for himself. An amount estimated at over R2 million is involved in the case,” Magaela said. In a media statement, Hawks spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, said the bank employee, who had worked at the bank for a while, allegedly loaded only half the cash he should have loaded, and kept the other half. He further said the other half was replaced with fake bank notes.

“The bank eventually discovered his shenanigans after he had already allegedly stolen R2,2 million.”
